KATARZYNA KACZOR
Geralt, witches and a vampire
patronage
Katarzyna Kaczor’s book is the first study devoted to the works of Poland’s most popular author of fantasy literature. Drawing portraits of Geralt, sorceresses, priestesses, the vampire Regis and other amazing characters from Sapkowski’s prose, the author presents the sources and evolution of images of fantasy heroes. By presenting the short stories and the Witcher saga against the background of contemporary stories about superheroes, witches, and heirs to Count Dracula, it shows how they fit into the ongoing discourse about the “monster.” Moreover, on the basis of the Witcher stories, the author presents the way in which fantasy writers use mythology and the stories they create take on the functions of myths and become their contemporary counterparts.
